Sponsorship

Why is Sponsorship Important?

As per the guidelines of Directorate General of Shipping sponsorship is mandatory for admission to the DNS course.

What does sponsorship imply?

DNS course is Diploma in Nautical Science leading to B Sc Applied Nautical science degree course.

This is a 3 year course which comprises 6 semesters of 6 months duration each, that is a total of 36 months.

Semester 1 & semester 2 are done in a shore based academy / institute like the International Maritime Institute (IMI)

Semester 3, 4 and 5 comprise of onboard training and Structured Shipboard Training Program or the SSTP.

For this part of the training that is semester 3, 4 & 5 the cadet needs to go on board a merchant vessel to complete the onboard training curriculum.

Since onboard training is embedded in the course curriculum of the DNS program, the DG Shipping mandates that all cadets being admitted to the DNS program must be assured of an onboard training slot.

Once a cadet is sponsored by a shipping company, the company is assuring the cadet of this 18 months of sea service onboard one of its ships, the cadet gets stipend during his cadetship.

Being sponsored by a shipping company ensures that a cadet will complete the 18 months of sea service required for the  2nd Mate Certificate of Competency exam conducted by the  Directorate General of shipping.

The DNS cadet is required to clear the semester 1, 2 , 3,4 & 5 exams conducted by IMU and 2nd Mate Certificate of competency conducted by DG Shipping, which is also considered to be the sixth semester exam by IMU.

Upon successfully clearing all the above exams the cadet gets 2nd Mate COC from DG Shipping and B. Sc Applied Nautical Science degree from IMU.

Thus Sponsorship by a shipping company is essential for admission to the DNS programme.
